AED’s International Conference on Eating Disorders

May 5, 2016 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

AED’s International Conference on Eating Disorders

This year’s Academy of Eating Disorders (AED) conference is in San Francisco. Opal will be exhibiting at this conference with Kara, Lexi and Julie attending.  Join us there!  We are also very excited that Kara Bazzi is a part of a panel discussion that is being co-hosted by a few Sub-Interest Groups of the AED.

Here is the link and description for Kara’s panel:

Title:  Rethinking and Restoring Exercise for Health at Every Size: New Integrative Approaches for Eating Disorders Treatment and Recovery

Panel Members:  Janell Mensinger, PhD, United States; Rachel Calogero, PhD, FAED, United Kingdom; Beth Hartman McGilley, PhD, FAED, United States; Kara Bazzi, MS, LMFT, United States; Jennifer Harriger, PhD, United States

Description:  The overarching aim of this SIG panel is to connect and integrate knowledge regarding the role of exercise in eating disorders treatment and recovery from experts across three different SIGs (Sport and Exercise, Health at Every Size, and Professionals in Recovery). Primarily, we wish to facilitate dialogue on a more effective and sustainable approach for working with clients across the weight spectrum. This session will include a moderated panel discussion that will present new integrative ideas from research and clinical practice to support eating disorder professionals in addressing the continuum of dysfunctional exercise. New connections between exercise and weight stigma will be discussed. Intuitive exercise will be explored as an alternative approach to physical activity that simultaneously challenges weight stigma and body shame. Professionals’ personal experiences, case examples, and practical applications will be shared in order to illustrate how exercise can be restored to promote (and not hinder) eating disorders treatment and recovery. Benefits and challenges of using the Health at Every Size perspective in the context of exercise and eating disorders will be considered.

Format: As researchers and practitioners, speakers will each discuss their area(s) of expertise within exercise, Health at Every Size, and/or recovery, and how they connect exercise and HAES within their work. Then the session will be opened for discussion facilitated by discussion points and audience questions.
