Body Image in dance, yoga and fitness: Am I contributing to the problem?

Body Image in dance, yoga and fitness: Am I contributing to the problem?

A virtual workshop for teachers

Join Opal therapist and retired professional ballet dancer, Josh Spell for this workshop on body image and the role that teachers and instructors play in the reinforcement of body image standards or unhelpful rhetoric about the aesthetics of dance, yoga, or fitness bodies. This workshop will include teaching, as well as time for individual self-reflection and discussion. Sharing is optional and we invite participants to engage at their own comfort level.

There is something inside of each of us that informs why we think one body is better than the other, and this in turn can impact why we participate in an activity and how we project those beliefs in a class setting. This comes from internal messaging from society, family, the industry that we’re in.

Through this discussion and personal reflection, we will shift the focus  from the body of the person, to the embodied experience. This looks at implicit bias, diet-culture, beauty standards and more. We will explore what brought you to this field and why you are in the role of teacher. The goal of this discussion is to explore what it means to make our passions a sustainable, life-giving activity both for ourselves and for our students.
