Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) focuses on increasing emotion regulation while clients with eating disorders are often already overly emotionally regulated. This presentation introduces Radically Open-DBT (RO-DBT) which offers an exciting, novel DBT adaptation to treat emotional over-control which is often seen in anorexia nervosa and anxiety disorders.

Clients with eating disorders are often over-controlled and inhibited behaviorally and emotionally. Traditional dialectical behavior therapy targets emotional and behavioral under-control which can serve to only increase the inhibition seen in many of our clients with eating disorders. This presentation focuses on Radically Open-Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT), an innovative, new approach which targets the inhibited expression particularly associated with anorexia nervosa restricting type, anxiety disorders, and obsessive compulsive personality disorder. In this introduction to RO-DBT, we will explore the biosocial theory of over-controlled disorders and discuss the tenants of RO-DBT and its application to the treatment of eating disorders. We will further explore the importance of modeling radical openness as clinicians as we consult with colleagues and treat clients. Finally, specific applications of RO-DBT to the treatment of eating disorders will be shared.

1 CE offered to attendees.
